Adele. Amy Winehouse. Annie Lennox. Duffy. KT Tunstall. Lisa Stansfield. And, back in the day, Dusty Springfield.

Didn't know a thing about her until Christmas of 2011, when my daughter gave her partner a CD of her music. In the following months, I would become acquainted with. and fascinated by, her powerful vocals and hard-to-describe style.
As her own web site says: "Her debut album "Lungs" is full of harps, choirs, drums, elevator shafts, bits of metal, love, death, fireworks, string quartets, stamping, sighings, strange electronic wailing, lambs, lions, sick, broken glass, blood, moon, stars, drink, coffins, teeth, water, wedding dresses, and the silences in between.

And from these performances of "Howl" on the Letterman show and of "Hurricane Drunk" at Abbey Road.
Florence hails from south London. At age 26, with two hit albums behind her, she's destined for a lot more success. Wish I'd seen her last summer at Edgefield.
